Today I was shopping in my favorite synthesizer store (because that’s a kind of store you can have a favorite of), Switched On Austin, plunking away on a Korg Poly-61 when I look up from my seat and see someone really tall wearing a blue jean jacket and a vintage hat standing over me. “Oh hey, dude,” I remarked as I realized it was Win Butler, lead singer of the Arcade Fire. After shaking for a few minutes I also noticed Richard Parry and Will Butler, among some other people I didn’t recognize. Just some dudes playing some synthesizers.
After a while Win sat down with the Roland CR-78, which is this baaadaasss drum machine. I’d come into the store on previous occasions with the sole intention of playing this thing. He didn’t look like he knew exactly what he was doing so I showed him a few tricks. It was a cool moment because the CR-78 is the first thing you hear on this track: Heart of Glass, which is a piece of music that you might notice has some similarities to this song: Sprawl II, like this remix or more specifically this Hood Internet mashup. He mumbled some things about being a kid and playing with old drum machines similar to that one. Win mumbles a lot for a Grammy-winning recording artist.
And that is the story of Win and Stuart (not as good, you might imagine, as the Story of Win and Regine). I was so enamored with the situation that I made the promise to myself to get a tattoo of an image very similar to the one you see above. It’ll make a great tattoo.
